Location: 112 2nd Ave NE, Decatur, Alabama

POSITION: Full-time, salaried, some benefits

The Princess Theatre is located in beautiful, quaint and vibrant, historic downtown Decatur. Decatur sits on the Tennessee River in the North Alabama Tennessee Valley.

The Director of Education (DE) guides and oversees all aspects of the Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts (PTCPA) educational program. This position is a vital member of senior staff, reporting to the Executive Director.

  • Works closely with the Executive Director to design and implement innovative educational opportunities and programming that align with PTCPA's overall mission, vision and strategic plan
  • Cultivates partnerships and relationships within the community including schools, arts and community organizations with the goal of developing new and interesting educational programming that supports the overall mission and vision of the Theatre
  • Represents PTCPA in the greater educational and arts community
  • Creates and manages yearly budgets and expenses in line with the greater fiscal planning of PTCPA, including meeting set earned income goals
  • Coordinates the creation and distribution of promotion materials, both print and social media
  • When appropriate creates and or supports teaching artists in curriculum development for Young Audiences Program, Residencies, Workshops, and Professional Development
  • Facilitates post-show conversation with actors for Young Audience Program and main stage productions (in collaboration with Executive Director)
  • Responsible for the overall curating, planning, scheduling and budgeting of the Educational and Young Audiences Programming
  • Identifies, contracts with, and trains (when appropriate) new PTCPA Teaching Artists
  • Works with the Executive Director to design curriculum
  • Seeks and writes grants to support the program


  • Experience as a teaching artist or classroom teacher
  • Training in Mary Overlie’s Viewpoints, Tectonic Theatre’s Moment Work and Grotowski
  • Experience in developing curriculum, facilitating workshops and residencies for diverse student populations, implementing assessments and collaborating with teachers
  • Ability to articulate the value and importance of theatre education in both school and community settings
  • Familiarity with current Educational Theatre best practices
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills
  • Excellent writing and research skills
  • Able and willing to learn a variety of digital platforms and software
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills including the ability to meet deadlines and anticipate needs
  • Demonstrated ability to meet and grow income goals
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to collaborate as a member of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • 4-year degree in related field, Theatre, Educational Theatre, Education
  • Experience in successful grant-writing
  • High expectations of youth theatre
  • Willingness to experiment, push boundaries and reach high
  • Proven track record of collaborating in a professional environment
